April marked the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness month, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC).
On April 28, Denim Day, supporters made a social statement by wearing denim to show they stand with sexual assault survivors. Denim Day began in 1998, when the Italian Supreme Court decided to overturn a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Wearing denim on this day is meant to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are raped.
“It’s important that we stand up to the misconceptions about what causes rape and stand up for victims of sexual assault during Sexual Assault Awareness month,” junior Sofia Atallah said.
