The Mustangs lost 5-1 in a big game against Orange Lutheran on June 8 at Hart Park. While the Mustangs started out on top, scoring the first run of the game in the third inning, the Lancers battled back and scored five runs in the second and third innings, ultimately defeating the Mustangs.
“I think that we played well throughout the game,” junior Ben Gneiser said. “Our team didn’t quit when we were down and we fought to the end. We played an incredibly tough opponent and I’m very proud of my team.”
As the Lancers are ranked first overall in the state, the Mustangs felt the pressure going into this game, according to junior Addison Lee. With a hit from junior Connor Meidroth, though, the team tried to hold its ground.
“I was a bit nervous,” Lee said. “But they weren’t unbeatable last time we played them, so I had confidence that we could push through.”
This game ends the Mustangs season, after making it to the second round of CIF. The team’s overall record was 19-10, and, according to Gneiser, all players were distraught that their season had come to an end.
“Now that the season has ended, it would be folly to say that I’m not a little sad and disappointed,” Gneiser said. “I love every one of my teammates and I would have loved to see us go to the end. Especially for the seniors. They are an incredible group of guys, and I know that Costa Baseball will miss them all.”
