Senior and AP Studio Art student, Francesca Kula showcases her various designs of artwork through local gallery space and nonprofit, Resin Art.

Costa’s virtual art exhibit is an outlet for art students to showcase their work throughout the year. Mr. Reichardt, Mrs. Reid and Mrs. Heredia worked with the Visual Arts Booster Club and Resin art to plan the event. Around 50 students’ had their art displayed,  including senior and Costa’s 12th annual solo strings competition winner in the Upper Division, Andrew Lui.

“We were excited to be able to showcase the student’s work in a professional gallery,”   Heredia said. “[Resin] has a collective of professional artists that work in the space and they also work with local schools and community groups.”

Kula started working at Resin in October 2019 when she noticed her friend, and artist, Amelia Mcrae was volunteering there. Resin Art is a youth gallery space where volunteers can teach kids about art and creativity and social emotional tools through the Creative Wisdom Program. This program is a combination of yoga with social emotional tools such as:; acceptance, gratitude, compassion and forgiveness to help the students control their inner world relationship to their outer world, Kula says.

“I work with kids specifically, a lot of our program is one on one,” Senior Kula said. “base attention with volunteers and other employees like the teachers. [They] work with the students [to] help them develop their creative ideas and projects, throughout the class each week.”

Her current style is morphing into fashion and portraits, although she has continued to explore documentary photography and street photography with buildings and landscapes. According to Kula, she plans to go to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York City to pursue her dream of professionally practicing photography.

“I really like how photos are able to authentically capture the world around it,” Kula said. “That’s something that really inspires me, is to capture the world I see, through my perception. That’s something that I have always been trying to aspire to do.”

When it comes to drawing, she considers herself to be subpar although she likes to create collages and has a more abstract style rather than realism style she uses in her photography. Kula says she likes to look at fashion magazines as well as Pinterest and even her own friends as sources of inspiration. Kula recently did a photoshoot with Amelia Mcrae, who introduced her to Resin Art.

“Because I started so young, expressing myself through art was very natural to me as I got older,” Mcrae said. “I always liked helping out during [the shows], you can meet some really interesting people and make lots of new friends”

Kula says she hopes to be a part of an artistic collective, like Resin Art, or work for a magazine or gallery space. She is a strong participant when it comes to giving back to her community, and she likes working with people, Kula says. Mcrae says she has been more involved in the community due to her drive for creative expression.

“It was super exciting to be able to finally see people I haven’t seen in a few months,” Mcrae said. “But as a senior, it was bittersweet. Being around my artistic friends and family members have all been incredibly supportive and I’m very thankful for that.”
