The Mira Costa Comedy Sportz team never ceases to make its audience burst with laughter, so it is no doubt that some of the team’s parents have the ability to do the same.
The Comedy Sportz team faces off against teams from other schools in heated and hilarious matches of improvisational comedy. Students make up characters and sometimes play each other in various games where the team members are required to think on their feet and entertain the audience.
On May 14, several of the members of the team joined forces to face off in a match against their parents.
“The parents are always interested in what we’re doing and it was a great opportunity for them to showcase each other’s talents,” sophomore Eli Rivas said.
Parents were selected either by volunteering for the match themselves or by being recommended by their child. Adviser Paul Silva and parents Amy Howorth, Cathy Baer, Radha Delamarter, Simon Swart, Colleen McSweeney, Victor Rivas Rivers and Marissa Moskewicz were all featured in the match. Although it was an unofficial match, it followed the traditional format of a Comedy Sportz game.
“This was definitely one of the best matches of the year. The parents were hilarious,” freshman Ron Yadin said.
The kids’ team faced off against the parents’ team in a series of games including “Parallel Universe,” “Answering Machine,” and many more.
In “Parallel Universe,” players participated in two different situations: being stranded in Madagascar and hanging out in a bowling alley. The comedians were required to act out the situations and switch between the two. They played other similarly constructed improvisational games.
“Two weeks before the parents were allowed to come to the practices. We went over the basic rules with them, which was not only a good thing for them, but a great reminder for us,” senior Sarah Mitchell said.
The match turned into a very close game with the victors only taking the win by an inch. The parents’ team eventually came through and defeated the students with a score of 45-43.
“Mira Costa Comedy Sportz manager Ben Silva coached both the parents and the students, and everybody played at the top of their abilities. It wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for him, and he matched up the teams really well,” audience member Miriam Rivas said.
This was the Comedy Sportz team’s first parent night. On June 18, the team will be going up against previous Comedy Sportz members in an alumni match. Comedy Sportz team members hope it will give the audience and the students a chance to see how they can compare to older members. Students who wish to view the match may purchase tickets for $5. Team members said they look forward to the alumni match greatly.
