Costa’s PTA Reflections Art Contest bears the theme, “I will change the world by…” and includes categories such as dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts, as well as a special artist category for students with disabilities.
This year’s judges include Taz Goldstein and Don Williams for film production, Michael Hernandez and Bo Bridges for photography, Alysha Wheeler-Henrickson and Laura Wahl for dance choreography, Nicola Harris and Elena Garate for literature, Derek Billings-Carter and Wendy Stillman for visual arts, and Kate Crellin and Je’Nai Kuhn for music composition.
“I absolutely think it’s important for young people to be involved in the arts,” said Je’Nai Kuhn, one of this year’s music composition judges. “That’s where I believe exploration, curiosity, and the freedom to test boundaries begin.”
Students must submit their work for the contest digitally via the California State PTA website by October 19. Works are submitted first to the Mira Costa PTA, and the winning pieces are then judged by the Manhattan Beach Council of PTA’s and the 33rd District PTA. After passing through these standards of judgment, the entries are submitted to the California State PTA, where they can earn Outstanding Interpretation or Award of Excellence to represent California in the final round of judging by the National PTA.
“I think it’s important to trust in yourself and your ideas,” said Kuhn. “Anything is possible. Everything begins with an idea.”
