Free meals during nutrition and lunch are available to students throughout MBUSD with no requirements except to show their school ID at the meal carts. This will continue throughout the year as well as the 2022-2023 school year.
Meals, including an entree, side, and milk, are free however extras are not, which means that one can receive a free meal but must pay for individual items like cookies or beverages. Students must use their meal account to purchase these items because Costa is not accepting cash this school year.
“It is a means to assist families that were affected in various ways by the Covid-19 and the situation that ensued,” Costa’s Director of Food and Nutrition Léna Agee said.
A very interesting and well written article! The program makes sense because it is providing nutritious food but not offering food that is not nutritious. Students can pay extra for those items that are treats, and that seems fair. No one will go hungry for reasons beyond their control, and they will have the basics of a healthy diet provided with the option of adding extras on their own at reasonable prices. Good idea!
