Costa girls tennis defeated Beckman High School, 11-7, on Nov. 4. This was the Mustangs’ first round in CIF, and with this win, they secured their spot in the State Regionals to end their season on Nov. 19 and 20.
“I felt extremely happy because we lost the first round last year, and the team played very well.” sophomore Maily Huynh said. “I’m so excited for State Regionals, because we couldn’t qualify for it last year, and I’m looking forward to playing teams from all around California.”
At the end of the first round, it was a tie, 3-3, but the girls eventually took the lead with a final score of 11-7. The doubles pairs earned seven points toward the overall score, and the singles got the remaining four.
“During the game, I felt proud of myself for going undefeated,” senior Haily Huynh said. “Thankfully, we were able to pull out the win for CIF.”
The Mustangs next match took place on Wednesday against Peninsula High School for their second round of CIF. Currently the Peninsula Panthers are ranked number two in the Open Division, while the Mustangs are ranked third. The result of Wednesday’s match were not available at the time of publication.
“I’m super excited for the CIF match, and I can’t wait to play doubles with Ella [Davis],” sophomore Alisa Lansky said. “Because we are always having fun playing together!”
According to Huynh, the Mustangs’ strategy for this match was to work hard, try their best on the courts, and continue to work together as a team.
“We picked this strategy because it allows us to put all of our effort into the game and the court,”senior Haily Huynh said. “With our work ethic, I feel like we will be able to rally together if the game gets close to pull off the win. This strategy has worked well in the past since it allows for us to work hard as a group.”
