Costa boys indoor volleyball fell short against Mater Dei 2-3 on Mar. 8 at Costa. The boys played a total of five close sets with scores of 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, and 12-15 with Mater Dei ultimately taking the win.
Costa won the first and second set with 5 and 7 point leads. During the second and third set, the two teams were neck and neck, but Mater Dei was able to pull through and take the win.
“We played well in the beginning, but as a team we need to put an emphasis on closing out games in the later sets and limiting the silly mistakes,” sophomore Stone Seligson said. “We need to focus on keeping high intensity throughout the whole match.”
In the middle of the fifth set, Mater Dei was leading, but Seligson closed the gap with a quick put away of the ball, making it 12-13; however, Mater Dei won the next two points to end the game.
“I thought we played at a pretty high level and just needed to close out the third set,” said sophomore Zach Chapin. “It’s early in the season, and we have a long way to go before CIF in May, so we’re not too worried. We’re ready to focus on our next game against Corona Del Mar on Mar. 14.”
