On April 20 during AM Office Hours, Costa bands, organizations, and clubs came together to perform on the Mustang Mall stage and host multiple booths on campus.

Students gathered to listen to music and explore booths with the aim of highlighting diversity, according to the Link Crew team. This year’s theme was “come together,” with a focus on inclusion.

“My favorite part was watching the big performance of the band and seeing all of the talented students at our school,” said sophomore Ella Luthro. “The whole event was really fun and well put together.”

Costa students dressed up in ‘70s clothing, festival gear, and beaded necklaces to show school spirit. At the event, a raffle took place that was sponsored by Spyder, MBX, El Gringo, Islands, Subaru, and the Mira Costa PTSA. Link Crew was responsible for organizing the event.

“The Costachella committee organized the event and did an amazing job of putting it together,” said junior Katie Kabealo. “My role in Costachella was to advertise for the event, encourage participation at the booths, and also to serve lunch to MCHS staff.”

Madison Hutchinson, the leader of Link Crew and English teacher at Costa, was the leading organizer of Costachella. The team prepared for the event by meeting every other week to review sponsors and discuss logistics. Costa’s Drama students and other student bands performed a series of musical songs at the Mustang Mall.

“We couldn’t have done any of this without Ms. Hutchinson,” said junior Gaby Apfel. “She was honestly the backbone of this entire project. She not only took charge in making sure the team was doing everything we needed to, but she was also so helpful and kind during the process. You could tell how much effort was put in by the team and all of Link Crew, and it was really nice to see all of us working together.”

Multiple clubs hosted booths at the event. Participants included H.E.A.R.T. Club, St. Michael Project, American Sign Language Club, Latino Scholars Union, Jewish Cultural Club, Diversify our Narrative and Friendship Club.

“My favorite part about Costachella was participating in all the activities at the club booths,” said Kabealo. “I love how the activities were unique to each club and raised awareness for the club’s purpose.”
