After winning in a reverse sweep against Mater Dei, Costa boys indoor volleyball fell to Newport Harbor High School, 3-0, on May 7 in the Mira Costa gym during the semifinals of CIF with set scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 27-25.

According to Leonard, the boys need to focus on limiting any unforced errors. Although the team lost, the Mustangs were extremely supportive of each other both on and off the court, according to Leonard.

“Each set was really close,” said sophomore outside hitter Reese Leonard. “However, I think we needed to lock down on the serves in the first set because we missed seven serves.”

According to Leonard, sophomore outside hitter Victor Loiola was the star player of the game. Loiola had 17 kills while sophomore opposite Stone Seligson and senior outside hitter Mick Bakos had 6, according to Leonard.

“Our bench was fired as we were all really dialed into the game,” said Leonard. “Overall, I think Newport Harbor played better defense than us and outserved us off the court.”
