Costa students face off in dodgeball matches during lunch at the tennis courts. The tournament started on May 26 and ended on June 6 with Team LUVAS taking the championship title.

“[My team and I] enjoyed playing with each other and working together to defeat the other teams,” junior Izzy Hory said. “My favorite part of the tournament was rotating players throughout different games as everyone was able to get a chance to hit someone.”

This was the first dodgeball tournament held at Mira Costa since 2019. ASB hopes to make this an annual event throughout the following years, according to junior Noah Lee. Due to COVID-19, ASB had to buy all new dodgeballs for this tournament, which are priced at $50 per bag. To make up the cost of the newly purchased dodgeballs, a $10 entry fee was enacted.

“The only struggle that we came across was how we were going to fit 16 teams on eight courts,” Lee said. “Kayle Marsh resolved this issue by communicating with the head of security to open two more tennis courts and take the nets down for the tournament.”

On their first day of playing, Team LUVAS came out on top, winning two out of three matches against the opposing team, Kamachee’s Council. They continued their winning streak until the finals against Da Monstas, when they again won two out of three rounds.

“My favorite memory from the tournament was being able to play in the championship in the Quad, but I also really enjoyed going against the seniors in the second round,” junior Evan Herr said. “I played baseball with them all year, and competing against them was definitely something to remember.”

The LUVAS was composed of juniors Herr, Ryan Bui, Joe Brewer, Dillon Despain, and Cole Crotty. Da Monstas was an all senior team including Connor Meidroth, Wyatt Dyer, Mick Bakos, Will Soderlund, and Brett Mccalla.

“We got together and thought we had a good chance to win with the guys on our team,” Bui said. “It ended up working out for us, and I hope we stay with the same team next year.”

In the first round, Team LUVAS eliminated four out of the five opposing players. After throwing back and forth, Crotty hit Dyer in the foot while Dyer tried to dodge the ball. The first round went to The LUVAS.

“We didn’t have a huge strategy at the start, but we ended up picking guys off one by one and eventually got the job done,” Crotty said. “We had a ton of fun, and we look forward to defending our title next year.”

The LUVAS voted Joe Brewer as MVP. Brewer performed one of the most athletic moves at the end of the match to help secure his team’s victory, according to Herr.

“I was just happy to play a big role on an incredible team, and the energy was there the entire time,” Brewer said. “We worked and trained hard, so we didn’t expect anything less than what we achieved today.”

In the final round, The LUVAS eliminated Da Monstas early on in the game, giving them the ability to pull ahead. Dyer quickly eliminated most of The LUVAS players shortly after. At the end of the last round, Brewers jumped to dodge Soderlund’s throw. Seconds later, Herr threw the last ball, hitting Soderlund and leading to Team LUVAS victory.

“Our team has a good background together in baseball, so that’s why it might have been so easy to win,” Despain said. “I’m proud of our team for winning, we had a lot of guys thinking they would beat us easily, but it never happened.”
