After being named Daily Breeze’s Player of the Year in January, sophomore Charlie Fuerbringer was offered to be a part of the USA Volleyball 2022 U.S. Girls U19 training team.
“I always work hard and have dedicated myself to the sport,” Fuerbringer said. “With hard work I am able to play as the best version of myself. I play seven hours a week and started volleyball when I was eight years old.”
The Girls U19 training team will consist of the best female indoor volleyball players across the country. According to Fuerbringer, before the team was picked, a group of girls was invited to a series of training camps in Anaheim and Chicago. After carefully watching the girls and what they had to offer, the coaches then chose 20 girls they thought were most fit for the team.
“These camps were a way for some of the top athletes to show off their skills and compete with others in their same position,” Fuerbringer said. “To be picked to be on the training team is an honor and proof that you can achieve your goals with hard work.”
On July 6, the training team will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma to practice for eight days. They will be coached by top-level coaches and will be treated as if they were on an Olympic team, according to Fuerbringer. The players will then be either selected or cut, and if selected, will go on to play the other international teams.
“The purpose of the team is to gain the most knowledge about the sport that you can and to become a better player,” Fuerbringer said. “This team is full of the best athletes across the country, and playing with them will be a huge learning experience.”
Despite being chosen to be a part of the exclusive training team, this does not guarantee Fuebringer a spot on the competing team. According to Fuerbringer, on July 15, the coaches will choose 12 out of the 20 girls to represent the USA in the Panam Cup.
“Usually competing in the Panam Cup means traveling out of the country,” Fuerbringer said. “However, this year USA is hosting it, so instead of traveling, the team will be competing in Tulsa, Oklahoma.”
In Tulsa, the girls will train for a total of 14 hours in hopes that they will make the competition team, according to Fuerbringer. According to Fuerbringer, players from other South Bay high schools will attend as well, allowing her to be around a few familiar faces at the tryout.
“I love putting in the work and seeing results,” Fuerbringer said. “Playing with and against people I love is really fun and makes me happy.”
