During every Academy Awards ceremony, there comes a point when a well-known actor or a virtually unknown producer will stand before the show’s 30 million viewers and give an absurdly long-winded speech. Beware: it is guaranteed to happen this time around too.
This will not be an acceptance speech. In all likelihood, it will be an introduction for an incredibly obscure member of the Academy whose presence requires a good 10 minutes worth of celebrity backing to keep the viewers’ interest.
It will be rife with clichés about how movies “take us away” and “transport us to a new world.” The phrases “incredible journey” and “amazing experiences” will inevitably be used.
The truth, though, is that movies mean something different to everyone. Some people barely think of films as anything other than basic, ultimately unimportant entertainment. Others consider movies to be manifestations of significant cultural and artistic contributions.
Accordingly, the Oscars mean different things to different people. To some, the Oscars are just another awards show that’s good enough entertainment if nothing else is on television that night. To others, the Academy Awards are the emotionally wrecking culmination of a yearlong cinematic journey.
However, one may feel about the Academy Awards, it is undeniable that the awards won will affect the direction that acting, directing, writing and all other aspects of the moviemaking process will take over the course of the following year. So read up and tune in on Feb. 27 to watch the 83rd Academy Awards.
