On Sept. 2, Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body held Class Wars in the Mustang Mall to unify all grades with fun games and activities.

Associated Student Body (ASB) hosted the activities in the Mustang Mall and used speakers to play music to contribute to the ambiance of the event and draw students in to participate. Only those who were wearing their class shirts were able to partake in the event.

“The games were so fun,” said sophomore Kyle Johnson. “My favorite was the egg race.”

Along with the egg race, students competed in a balloon toss, as well as attempting to fit as many students as possible from each grade on a jump rope. After all three games, the rankings saw seniors in first place, juniors and sophomores in a tie for second and freshmen in third place.

“I loved class wars,” said sophomore Flora Uslaner. “ASB did such a great job planning and putting it together.”

According to sophomore class President Isaac Faynsod, ASB spent a lot of time bringing this event to life. All positions alike came together to help create an exciting lunch period. ASB members and their peers collaborated to compete for an ice cream day prize, fulfilling Class Wars’ initial goal.

“The idea with the class shirts and the event is to build camaraderie and school spirit within the classes,” said ASB Director Lisa Claypoole. “I think the seniors are looking forward to having a year of normalcy, and I think that’s going to bode well for our school regarding spirit and involvement.”

Class Wars used to take place in the gym prior to 2018, but once the gym was reconstructed, there was no longer a place for the competition to be held. ASB saw this new school year as the perfect opportunity to bring Class Wars back in a new location.

“We plan on holding more competitions in the future with more games and prizes,” said Faynsod.

With these high hopes for future Class Wars, students can also plan on at least one competition per month on “Fun Fridays.” Claypoole hopes these “Fun Fridays” will encourage more school spirit and involvement.

“I think Class Wars is amazing,” said sophomore Caitlyn O’Hara. “I want Costa to hold more of these occasions.”
