“The Woman King” is an action-packed film that is not only dramatic and intense but also comical and moving. The film is phenomenal for its extreme action scenes as well as its astonishing cast with incredible female actors who have extraordinary martial arts and fighting skills.
Released on September 16, “The Woman King” is already exceeding expectations in theaters. So far, rotten tomatoes are at 95 percent, and the movie has made over $19 million. The film is based on the true story of the Agojie woman but is facing some criticism for not being entirely historically accurate.
The cast included Viola Davis playing Nanisca; Lashana Lynch playing Izogie; Thuso Mbedu playing Nawi; Sheila Atim playing Amenza. According to CNN, the women of the cast underwent many months of specific personalized training to shape their bodies to fit their characters.
According to Movie Web, Gina Prince Bythewood directed the movie, however she did not limit herself to her directing duties; she trained in their extensive nine-month-long high-intensity personalized workouts, martial arts, and weapon training. As a result, a tighter bond between the female members of the cast and crew was created.
The movie begins with an unexpected action scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film and leaves viewers in awe. Throughout the film, General Nanisca (Viola Davis) and other Agojie women train teenagers to pass numerous tests to become a part of the King’s guard and protect their land from settlers who want to capture them.
Nanisca and Nawi bond over shared aspects, ironically in their contrasts but even more in their alikenesses. They ultimately form a close, surprising relationship that leaves the audience in tears. The story is entertaining, captivating, romantic, and never dull.
Though “The Woman King” has been doing very well in its first few days, there has been much backlash; critics are saying the story is historically inaccurate. According to Newsone, some believe that Sony and Prince Bythewood “whitewashed” the story as well as wrongly depicted the slave trade. Despite these negative comments, more have thoroughly enjoyed the film.
“The Woman King” costume crew selected outstanding costumes for the characters that transformed the environment. The Agojie women’s armor had intricate details, and the citizens’ clothes had fascinating patterns. A large amount of dedication and attention to detail clearly went into creating the costumes.
“The Woman King” is a must-see, featuring talented actors and teams, a fantastic plot, beautiful relationships, and fabulous costumes. It is unmistakable that the cast and crew put tremendous effort and devotion into this film, which undoubtedly paid off.
