The Mira Costa Mustangs defeated Culver City in a close battle, 21-12. The Mustangs started off their league games strong after coming back, down 5 going into halftime. According to sophomore quarterback Nico De La Cruz, the offense had to make some changes going into half due to the injury of junior wide receiver Reese Leonard.
“After Reese got hurt we had to make some changes because he couldn’t come back,” De La Cruz said. “We didn’t really have to make too many adjustments because all our guys know the plays and can run the offense correctly.”
The Mustang offense was stagnant in the first half, only scoring 7 points. In the third quater, senior running back Mathew Krauskaus ran into the end zone to shift the momentum of the game. With a second half shutout along with a game clinching pick six, the defense dominated the second half and according to De La Cruz, the crowd was ecstatic.
“The atmosphere from the crowd definitely fired me and the team up,” De La Cruz said. “It’s always great to see our classmates cheering us on.”
The Mustangs added to their record, 5-1, and will face the Palos Verdes Sea Kings on Friday, October 7th.
“If we want to win all of our bay league games, it’s going to take a lot of hard work from everybody,” De La Cruz said. “It will also take a lot of discipline from everyone.”
