On Sept. 28, Costa girls volleyball had an away game against rival school Redondo Union. Costa was almost defeated, but they came back to bring home the win.

“We had a game plan going in, but it didn’t stick. Rivalry games bring out different things for every team,” Junior outside hitter Chloe Hynes said.

During the first set, the Sea Hawks were bringing their all, and according to Hynes, challenging the Mustangs with their strong offense. The Mustangs, however, were able to pull through, winning 26 – 24.

“We won because we played as one rather than individuals,” said junior setter Charlie Fuerbringer. “Our fight to win also contributed to this.”

The Sea Hawks took the second and third match, winning 25 – 22 in the second, and 25-19 in the third. According to Fuerbringer, Redondo’s defense and offense wasn’t faltering, letting Costa make the errors which lead to their loss in those two sets.

“The environment at Redondo was pretty hostile and chaotic, so it was hard to recover from making errors,” said Hynes. “We all sort of felt the energy from their student section so we had to overcome that and focus on our game and the way we play.”

According to Hynes, the flock’s loud and energetic student section led to many of the Mustangs becoming nervous and slightly affecting their performance. However, they were able to push past that and come together as a team to win the next two sets, 28-26 and 16-14.

“We knew we had to focus really hard in order to win,” Fuerbringer said. “We struggled to play as a team but we came together and played for each other.

The next game will be at home against Palos Verdes Peninsula High School on Sept. 29. The Mustangs prepare for the upcoming game against the Panthers, and are creating a game plan on how they will take on these longtime rivals.

“We definitely want to limit the number of unforced errors that we give up and also not allow teams to get such big runs and leads,” said Hynes. “ We are ready for the next battle.”
