Girls tennis played the Redondo High School Seahawks in an away match on Thurs. October 6, defeating them 10-8 in a competitive match.
“We knew this was going to be tight going into it so the nerves were high,” junior Ashna Patel said. “Because we came together as a team we pulled through for the win.”
The Mustangs lost matches in the singles bracket, only getting 3 out of 9 games. The doubles scores got the team the majority of their games, as they won 6 out of the 9 matches played.
“When Ashna and I were playing [doubles], we knew we were in the deciding match and it could swing either way,” junior Bridget Ballantine said. “We didn’t let that stop us, especially when we were down 5-1 in the tiebreak.”
Ballantine and Patel had a very close doubles match. They rallied for every point and were neck and neck for the entirety of the match. The teams went to a 7-point tie-break and the Mustangs were down 5-1. The girls came back, ultimately winning the breaker 8-6.
“Especially in the last match, I’m really happy with how Bridget and I played,” said Patel. “When the pressure is high she always keeps me going and I play my best with her.”
The Mustangs have a record of 6-10 as they continue to move through their second set of Bay League matches. According to freshman Malia Fernandez, the team needs to keep their energy high while keeping their focus for weeks to come. The next match will be against Palos Verdes High School at home on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
“Beating Redondo was a huge confidence boost for our team,” Fernandez said. “This is exactly what we needed going into a big week against some of our close rivals like PV.”
