On Friday October 7th, Palos Verdes High School defeated the Mustangs, 40-10. The Sea Kings defense dominated, holding the Mustang offense to a low scoring affair, which has not happened in their last couple of games. The Sea Kings offense was unstoppable, leading the first half of the game, 27-10.
“I think we kind of beat ourselves on the offensive side of the ball,” senior wide receiver Cole Crotty said. “We had a couple big plays that were there but we weren’t able to make them happen.”
In their earlier games, the Mustang offense averaged 28 points per game, exploiting every defense they faced. The Sea King defense stopped their momentum, forcing turnovers and contested passes. The Mustangs were only able to put 10 points on the board in the first half, and were held to a scoreless second half. Costa’s offense was driven down the field, but a pick six in the red zone ended all hope.
“I think it was just playing in the afternoon,” sophomore quarterback Nico De La Cruz said. “We just couldn’t keep our minds locked in. Also, PV just had a good game plan against us and executed it very well.”
According to Crotty, the Mustangs are looking to bounce back for their Homecoming game against Santa Monica High School on Friday, October 14th at home.
“We’re gonna learn from that game but we’re ready to move on,” Crotty said. “We have a great opportunity this week to work hard and play a big game this Friday. We’re excited to get back out and prove ourselves again as we finish up our Bay League schedule.”
