It’s that time of the year again in Southern California, when the weather has hit the low 70s. You know what that means– fall is here, everyone. Pumpkin spice has taken over, Trader Joe’s pumpkin items are back and better than ever and, unfortunately, grades have now fluctuated from syllabus week.
Let’s go back a decade. When we were little, fall was the time to be alive. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” was playing on repeat, and mini pumpkins were on the corners of our desks. We were carving jack-o-lanterns on the kitchen counter and roasting the seeds inside, and, of course, by far the most important event of the year was around the corner, the Halloween parade on the elementary school playground.
Halloween night consisted of little pink poodle skirts and superhero onesies flooding the walk streets in search of the houses that gave out king-sized candy bars or houses with the most elaborate decorations. Meanwhile, older kids were depriving unlit houses of their entire candy bowls on the front step. In all fairness, who trusts people, let alone marginally-supervised children, to take only two pieces? These really were simpler times.
Nowadays, the candy culprits are exposed on Nextdoor, and, come 7:30 Monday morning, the older kids are regretting the brew they drank, witches brew, of course…
If I am not mistaken, this time of the year calls for some new “cold” weather basics. Del Amo is summoning the teenage population. The feeling of a new jacket, unwashed and still soft inside, maybe even still smelling like Nordstroms, is just perfect. You never know when we might go below 60 degrees. It would be tragic not to prepare for the tough winter ahead of us.
I know I am not the only one with an abundance of candles. Having your room smell like the inside of an apple pie increases productivity, but take this advice with caution, because you might find yourself five episodes into “Gilmore Girls,” wondering how the night passed by so quickly. Speaking of candles, Bath and Body Works’ fall line – it’s questionable.
It would not be fall without baking. Even if you don’t bake, can you seriously turn down a fresh slice of pumpkin bread? I think not. I will release my sacred recipe to get you all started out on the right foot with some pumpkin bread of your own. Thank me later.
Let me reiterate how crucial your attendance is at Trader Joe’s this autumn. Autumn, what a great word. It has been a pleasure reminding my valued readers to soak up the overcast weather and get cozy.
Until November,
Xoxo,
Ava
