On Monday October 31st, ASB hosted their annual Halloween Costume contest. It took place in the Mustang Mall during lunch.

The Halloween Costume Contest has been a yearly Costa tradition for nearly 30 years. The awards are split into 4 main categories; individual student costumes, best costumes by grade level, best group costumes and best staff costumes.

“This contest first began in the 1990’s,” ASB teacher and activities director Lisa Claypoole said. “It has become one of many Mira Costa traditions.”

According to Claypoole, almost 100 students entered the contest. At lunch, many students gathered to watch the winners who were selected by Claypoole’s 4th period ASB class get announced and given their awards.

“The competitors this year consisted mostly of juniors and seniors,” Claypoole said. “I would encourage lowerclassmen to get themselves more out there and not be shy of getting up in front of a crowd.”

This year’s student winners for their grade level were senior Ethan Crowley as a tech priest, junior Rohan Patel as Frozone, sophomore Samantha Allen as a target lady, and freshman Garret Buholzer as a Cyborg. Winners for the other categories were junior Clairette Lemieux dressed as a mushroom, selected for most creative costume and junior Harper Hearne dressed as Walter White from the TV show Breaking Bad, chosen for scariest costume. MJ Beaumont dressed as Sue Sylvester from the show Glee, winning funniest costume and junior Vanessa Conde dressed as Cinderella and was selected for best Disney character. In addition, junior Maddie Johnson dressed as Bruno Mars, was nominated as best celebrity look alike.

“I chose to participate in the contest after waking up early to dress up in my Walter White costume,” said Hearne. “After being selected for the scariest student costume, I was given a $10 In n Out gift card.”

On top of individual costumes, many students in well coordinated group costumes entered the contest. The winners for best student group costume were sophomores Jackson Stroyke, Sam Probst, Alaina Vandevan, and Julia Mendelson, dressed as Barbie Cowgirls. The best duo costume was given to juniors Gavin Gauss and Gordan Jonas, who dressed as Walter White and Sal Goodman, from the TV show Breaking Bad. According to ASB, the most captivating costume was sophomore Isaac Faysond’s Mr. Clean costume, and he received the best overall costume award.

“I am the type of person who starts planning my Halloween Costume 8 to 10 months ahead, so once I came up with the Mr. Clean idea I knew it was the one,” said Faysond. “Although I had my costume planned for a while, I decided to shave my head last minute after realizing the bald cap looked bad on me, although I was thinking about it anyway. As my award, I was given 5 gift cards to restaurants like Chipotle and Subway.”

In addition to the students, over 50 staff members entered and attended this contest as well. The staff winner for scariest individual costume was US history teacher Monika Wynen, who dressed as a scarecrow. The best overall teacher group costume was awarded to the science department staff, who dressed as planets. In addition to this, the most creative teacher group costume was assigned to the admin members, who dressed as the Wordle word game.

“I believe the Halloween Costume Contest is a fun event,” Wynen said, “This is because it gives the opportunity for students and teachers to come together.”
