‘The Noel Diary’ gives heart-warming perspective on Christmas movies

The new Netflix orginal film, “The Noel Diary,” is a romantic comedy that allows viewers to feel both joy and sorrow during the holiday season. “The Noel Diary” drifts away from the “normal” happily-ever-after Christmas movies and deals with facing one’s past traumas.

With a duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes, “The Noel Diary” begins by introducing Jacob Turner. He was at his prime, living life with his dog, Ava, as a wealthy, best-selling novelist. He enjoys his lonely life until he receives news of his estranged mother’s death. Arriving in his hometown to go through his mother’s possessions, he discovers something that shocks him. He comes in contact with Rachel, who is also searching for answers. With the help of neighbor Ellie, the two are able to find what each are looking for.

The cast consists of Justin Hartley as Jacob Turner and Barrett Doss as Rachel Campbell. Turner and Campbell are based on the same characters in the book by Richard Paul Evans.

One of the factors to the show’s success is the romance between Rachel and Jacob. Both of them are scared of abandonment but are able to help each other overcome that fear by going on a journey of self-discovery.

The plot of the film is easily its greatest strength. As Jake was trying to heal the pain of his past, Rachel was trying to find the answers to her questions about her birth mother. The movie gives a different twist on the classic Christmas movie and offers an unforgettable story, unlike the normal snow, music, and happily-ever-after Christmas movies, which is a satisfying change and gives a new outlook for the viewer.

“The Noel Diary” powerfully sends a message of hope. Although Jake and Rachel started out as complete strangers, the hope they had regarding the mysteries of their families helped carry them on their journey. The chemistry they share portrays the encouraging message of hope, love, and forgiveness.

Despite its strengths, “The Noel Diary” does not fit the aspects of most romance films. The movie is more of a realistic romance-drama, without a traditional fairytale story line. The movie would not be a top choice for the  viewers that enjoy the grand happily-ever-after of romantic comedies, but it is a must-watch to feel all of the heartfelt love, loss, and loneliness.

Additionally, Charles Shyer choice of direction makes the film different, leaving the audience confused and wanting more of the story line. For example, the end of the film left viewers perplexed due to the abrupt ending.

Overall, the acting and casting is what makes the viewers able to feel all the emotions the movie offers. With the heartfelt dialogue between Rachel and Jacob, it provides the viewer with a sense of love and warmth. Hartley is able to portray the painful subjects but not in an overwhelming way. “The Noel Diary” recreates the original through its characters, heart-warming story, dialogue, and a feeling of sincerity and belonging that make it easy to overlook some of the movie’s downsides.

The setting and overall ambience of the film was a perfect way to start the holiday season. With a spot-on performance, “The Noel Diary” is a must-watch film.

The film is a perfect addition to Netflix’s holiday films.  All actors provided charm to their character.

“The Noel Diary,” is rated TV-PG and  can be  streamed exclusively on Netflix.
