Xoxo, Ava Ava’s insight on holiday festivities

Ava’s insight on holiday festivities

By Ava Nicols, Sports Editor

It always feels as though December flies by. We’ve got T-minus-nine days until the Big Man comes down the chimney, and I hope to God by now you’ve channeled red and green color schemes and are in the mood for “The Polar Express” and peppermint.

One little obstacle standing between us and Christmas cheer is the big F-word. I can’t even bear to say it…finals.  We are heading into week three of the not-so-merry routine of studying for, probably crying about, and then worrying about exams. Deep breath, everyone– we’re in the home stretch. It is what it is, so best not let school ruin the Christmas spirit.

Christmas movies should be on repeat, people– you know you love them. “Love Actually” is a must-see this month, and I strongly advise you to check out some of my other favorites like: “It’s A Wonderful Life;” any of the “Home Alone”  movies; “A Christmas Story;” “The Santa Clause;” and “The Christmas Chronicles.”

Something tells me I am not the only one who loves wrapping gifts. One day I hope I can wrap as well as the ladies at Macy’s, but that day is far, far away. Mine still somehow end up uneven and with parts of the box showing, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

Like Buddy the Elf always says: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” So corny yet so true. Some songs that I’ve had on repeat are: Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas;” “Please Come Home For Christmas” by the Eagles; “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid; Frank Sinatra’s version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas;” “Little Saint Nick” by the Beach Boys; and my favorite, “Happy Xmas, The War is Over;” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Let’s talk holiday treats. Anything peppermint bark is acceptable, except in coffee. No negotiations, sorry to all you peppermint mocha lovers out there. Peppermint bark is always great, but its best form comes in Hershey’s Peppermint Kisses. Toffee is hit or miss, and most of the time mediocre. Personally, I’d rather save my sweets for cookies. A soft gingersnap, warm chocolate chip or a crispy cookie-cutter sugar you’ll find me rockin’ around the Christmas tree with a few of each in hand.

Although it won’t be snowing for our coastal Christmas, we can still embrace the marine layer and “bundle up.” Crochet is trending, and I could not be happier. Fingerless mittens– adorable, maybe a chunky scarf or sweater– yes please, and an honorable mention to neutral colors. They just make everything look good.

My Christmas wish to all of you are A’s on your report cards and that you promise to make up for the lack of sleep you got this semester. Hang in there, eat some candy canes, don’t touch the elf on the shelf, leave cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer and hug your family. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Until next year,

Xoxo,

Ava
