The Costa girls and boys basketball teams held a fundraiser ball drive on Monday in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club. Community members, Costa students, and game attendees were asked to bring a new, unwrapped sports ball to girls basketball’s home game on Monday.
“The ball drive is something that the Boys & Girls Club puts on every year with the goal to provide one of the kids involved in their program a sports ball for the holidays,” junior guard Juju O’Brien said. “We were able to set up a collection box at our home game to help them reach that goal.”
The Boys & Girls Club holds this drive every year, but this year, the boys frosh- soph coach had the idea to set up a col- lection bin at the game to donate. It was planned mainly by boys frosh-soph bas- ketball coach Tony Altamura, team parent Kristen Figge, and girls basketball assistant coach Haley Herdman.
“This is important because, given that we live in such a privileged area and have the means to give back, we should share that wealth with people who are not as fortu- nate,” O’Brien said. “There are so many kids who don’t receive holiday presents, and if we, as a program, can change that for some kids, we will always take up that opportunity.”
Costa’s basketball program hopes to par- ticipate in this every year with the Boys & Girls Club, especially because it is some- thing that is important to the team and re- warding, according to O’Brien
“It is rewarding because just thinking about how happy a little kid will be receiv- ing their own basketball for the holidays makes my heart smile,” O’Brien said. “We have hundreds of basketballs at our gym that we take for granted everyday; it really makes me appreciate what we have.”
