Winter formal will take place on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Westdrift Hotel in Manhattan Beach and will include dancing, activities, and food.
The Westdrift Hotel has a capacity of 2,100 people, with 1,100 tickets sold in total. According to Activities Director Lisa Claypoole, students are required to stay at the dance from 8:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. because the school will be held responsible for them during that time.
“The legal liability is when kids tell their parents that they are going to be at the venue, but go to [another location] 10 minutes after they arrive, like they did at Homecoming,” said Claypoole. “Homecoming was an event that we spent $50,000 on, and there was no shortage of things to do, but all kids wanted to do was leave. When you sign up to go to a school event, you are expected to go to that event and stay there until it is over.”
Costa’s Associated Student Body (ASB) began selling tickets on Dec. 27 for $57 each. From Jan. 14-20, tickets were available for $62 each. Those with ASB markers received discounted ticket prices.
According to Claypoole, the digitalization of the tickets prevents those who purchased them from giving their tickets to others who may use them to get into the dance without paying. In addition to dinner and dancing, Winter Formal will host casino games, caricature artists, karaoke, and two photo booths.
“A lot of schools don’t offer any activities but dancing, so our school is very lucky to have a great accountant and a great group of kids in student government who make fun happen,” said Claypoole.
