Junior center midfielder Sydney Bushman scored a “golden goal” during the girls soccer game
against Redondo Union on Dec. 19. Four days later, Bushman was featured on the news for her
achievement

On Dec. 19, Costa battled against Redondo Union at South High. While playing, Bushman
scored a golden goal, or the first goal scored during extra time, giving Costa an automatic win
against Redondo.

“When I scored the goal, I felt so many emotions at once,” Bushman said. “It was such an
awesome experience being able to score the ‘golden goal’ in the final, and it definitely made it
even better having it be against Redondo.”

According to Bushman, not only was her goal extremely important for the team, but it was so
significant that it was showcased on the news. The video of Bushman’s goal was featured on
the NBC Nightly News on Dec. 23.

“Being able to celebrate with my teammates was super fun,” Bushman said. “It definitely made
all the hard work throughout the tournament worth it.”

Bushman began playing soccer at the age of four. According to Bushman, she immediately fell
in love with the sport and was eager to continue playing. Bushman joined the Costa soccer
team her freshman year.

“I love being able to play at Costa because I play with all my friends that I don’t get to play with
outside of school,” Bushman said. “It’s super fun to be able to play with every grade level
because in club it’s only people your age.”

According to Bushman, she looks forward to her future in soccer, as she is currently going
through the college recruiting process. She said she hopes that she can continue to pursue her
dreams and grow as a soccer player.

“The opportunity to play in college motivates me to continue playing and get better,” Bushman
said. “I want to be the best player I can be, and that pushes me to work hard everyday.”

Bushman constantly looks up to professional soccer players, including Julie Ertz. Having
someone to look up to makes her feel inspired to train and play her best. According to
Bushman, she aspires to be like Ertz every day.

“Julie Ertz is the player that inspires me the most,” Bushman said. “She plays the same position
as me, and I definitely have learned a lot about the game from watching her play. She has such
a big presence on the field and yet plays so calmly on the ball.”

The Mustangs’ next game is today against Palos Verdes High School at home, and she said
she hopes to see everyone there.

“I’m super grateful for Costa soccer and being able to be recognized for being a part of such an
awesome program.” Bushman said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates’ support. The
girls have truly become some of my best friends, and I couldn’t ask for a better team.”
