Iggy Pop’s newest album “Every Loser” is full of indifferent songs which lack contrast
and originality, making the album unexciting and monotonous to listen to.
James Newell Osterberg Junior, who is professionally known as Iggy Pop started
releasing rock and metal music in the 1970’s, which he continued to do consistently until
the 2000’s. Recently, Pop has resumed his journey in the music industry with his 19th
studio album “Every Loser”, which was released on January 6, 2023.
“Every Loser”, which was released by Gold Tooth and Atlantic Records, consists of
eleven songs. Two of the eleven songs were released prior to the rest of the album.
These bland songs were “Frenzy” and “Strung Out Johnny” which were both dull and
almost indistinguishable from one another.
After waiting 4 years for the release of Pop’s newest album, the music leaves listeners
disappointed due to the similarities in sound from Pop’s previous albums. After joining
the music industry nearly 50 years ago, Pop has not shifted genres at all.
When paying attention to the background music and beats of each song in this album, it
is clear that almost every one mirrors one another. Although the lyrics of each song are
original, the background music in each song is almost identical.
The song “Comments” has quickly become well liked by fans due to Pop’s rhyming
lyrics which he wrote himself. The rhyming verses it’s written in cause this song to stand
out from the others in the album, which makes the lyrics memorable to listeners.
On the other hand, “Frenzy” shows a whole other side to this artist. This unpleasant
song is filled with loud yelling and profanity, which causes it to become unbearable to
listen to. As well as sounding unpleasant, the lyrics demonstrate that Pop is extremely
egoistic.
Although this album is insignificant and fails to demonstrate most of Pop’s talent, it is
incredible that after nearly five decades in the music industry, Pop continues to perform
and release new songs and albums, at the age of 75.
“Every Loser” is not worth listening to, especially if you are not a fan of heavy metal or
rock music. Although Iggy Pop has had a successful and long career, his music has not
changed enough which has made it become redundant and uninteresting to hear.
“Every Loser” can be streamed on Youtube, Spotify, and Apple Music. The album can
be purchased for $25.00 at Barnes and Noble, The Warner Music Shop, and Amazon.
