Lil Yachty’s newest studio album, “Let’s Start Here” pleasantly surprises listeners with changes and varieties of genres, altering the feeling delivered in previous albums.
Miles Parks McCollum, professionally known as Lil Yachty, released his 5th studio album, “Let’s Start Here”, on January 27, 2023. This unique album consists of fourteen songs with a total length of fifty-seven minutes.
In previous albums, Yachty has been known for his music consistently falling into the hip hop and rap category. While some songs in “Let’s Start Here” still fall into that category, Yachty showed his true musical ability by venturing into other genres such as soul and blues.
Unlike many other rappers, Yachty enunciates his lyrics fairly well which helps emphasize their significance. This impacts the listeners in order to focus on the meaning behind the lyrics, rather than the rhythm and sound of the songs.
This album featured many other talented artists as well, making each song diverse and different in its own way. The featured artists were Teezo Touchdown, Justin Skye, Fousheé, Diana Gordon, and Daniel Caesar.
In “:(failure:(”, one of the singles of “Let’s Start Here” which falls under the rap genre, Yachty describes his road from poverty to success. He expresses not only financial hardships, but the consequence sudden change can have on mental health. The thorough lyrics which tell his story throughout this song cause listeners to sympathize with his narrative and gain respect for Yachty, as he opens up about his past with his music.
On the other hand, “WE SAW THE SUN!” sets a very contrasting tone. After catching the listeners’ attention with soft and melodic instrumental music which is hardly ever heard from Yachty, he reminisces about the fun and lively experiences he had the previous night.
Finally, a more serious tone was set in “paint THE sky” in which Yachty speaks out about how he has used drugs and alcohol in order to escape issues in his life. Although he makes it clear that this is an unsafe way to cope, he sometimes feels as if it’s his only choice. Many listeners enjoy this song and find it relatable because many people struggle with drug and alcohol issues every day and it is not common for celebrities to open up about such subjects.
A variety of many topics was covered during this album including anything from heartbreak and loss to success and blessedness. The nice blend of genres, artists, and subject matters make the “Let’s Start Now” unique and worth listening to.
“Let’s Start Now” can be streamed on Youtube Music, SoundCloud, and Spotify. The album can be purchased for $38.97 on Amazon.com Music, Target, and Barnes & Noble.
