On Feb. 9, girls basketball faced Chaminade College Preparatory High School in a close game. Ultimately, the Mustangs fell short, losing 76-66 in the first round of California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS.)
The Mustangs were ahead in the first half, and according to junior shooting guard Juju O’Brien, the girls were playing strong offensively as they made a majority of their shots, putting them in the lead.
“We were hitting most of our shots and were getting pretty much anything we wanted in our offense,” O’Brien said. “That’s what helped us keep our lead throughout the first two quarters.”
After the half, the Mustangs began to lose their lead. According to O’Brien, the Eagles’ defensive rebounds were hurting the Mustangs as two girls on Chaminade made a total of 29 rebounds.
“They were big and athletic, so that’s why they generally had the rebound advantage over us,” O’Brien said. “If we could have found a way to effectively box out their two best rebounders, we would have won that game by 15 points.”
Since the Mustangs will not be advancing to State, this game marked the end of the 2022-23 girls basketball season. The girls’ season was a success as it finished with an overall record of 18-10.
“Although we didn’t get the end result we were hoping for in terms of CIF and playoffs, we had a great run,” O’Brien said. “I wouldn’t have wanted to do it with any other team.”
