On Thursday, White team members and juniors Devan Malik, Akash Mishra, Caden Coons, and Keith Daniels won the final round of Scholar Quiz, an annual competition at Costa.
The final round of the competition was held in the auditorium, along with its senior runner ups: Dylan Iskander, Kyle Fukumoto, Jacob Tan, and E Harrison. Sixty-four teams started the competition on March 21. Each day, only the winning team from each match-up advanced to the next round. A bracket displayed the results of each round outside room 42.
“We’re very proud of our performance,” said Mishra. “We think Scholar Quiz is great because it allows people to display their knowledge.”
The final round was hosted by Costa Principal Dr. Karina Gerger; Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Bowes, who read the questions; Costa Vice Principal Amanda Vavao, who served as the flag judge; and scorekeepers Heather de Roos, Heather Hoffman, and Andrea Hynes. The event was sponsored by Study Hut, who provided shirts for each player and questions to be read for each match.
“It was really positive, and I’m happy we got to the spot we got to,” said Harrison. “We really wanted to do as much as we can to get to the finals, and I’m really happy I did. It was definitely a fun experience learning stuff that I never think about in my day-to-day life, and being able to do this competition was really fun in general.”
At halftime, the White team led by 20 points with a score of 85-65. At the end of the match, the White team kept the lead with a score of 195-105. The White team members will get their name engraved on a trophy. In addition, each semifinalist was congratulated and received an award.
“I think we work really well together, and we feed off of each other’s energy,” said Malik. “We really support each other as a team. We’ve each been doing a little bit of studying this week, and we’ve done a few practice sessions together.”
Each round of Scholar Quiz included several types of questions, each of which, if answered correctly, earned the team five points. The winning team won a plaque and a check for $50 per member.
“We are really happy that we won and are excited to compete again next year,” said Coons.
