After a long couple of days away in the Big Apple, I am back and feeling more fulfilled than ever. Let me tell you why.
For starters, we beach people don’t really venture underground for transportation, so you can imagine how much fun I had on the subway. Despite the fact that my hand sanitizer is all finished, and I no longer need to brace myself for each stop, seeing how many people rely on the subway for their commutes never fails to surprise me. Call me nosey (I prefer observant), but the subway is an epicenter for some amazing people-watching.
This was a special occasion, people. A few (good) bagels in your life never hurt anyone. Besides, I had to fuel up for all the walking somehow, right?
Speaking of walking, we hit Central Park, the upper east side, even shopped in Soho, and, to top it off, walked through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Needless to say, we covered some serious ground, with some help from the subway. The blisters on our feet are proof that we made the most of our days; I think that is the best way to travel;w don’t you agree? Living out my “Sex and the City” fantasies as I walked down the apartment-lined sidewalk was revolutionary. Carrie Bradshaw who?
I’m sure you’re wondering why I took off a week of school to go to NYC. The real reason for the trip was to attend the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) conference. The La Vista girls, our beloved advisor Mac, and I hit the city and, frankly, I don’t know if the city knows what hit it. My experience at CSPA opened my eyes as a writer and student tremendously, and I think all my peers would agree. After attending a wide range of conferences and lectures from “Leadership 101,” “How to Interview,” and, my personal favorite, “How to: Column,” I left New York with a new set of skills and topics I cannot wait to pull from.
Though everyone struggled to keep their eyes open during our earliest conferences because of the action-filled days we had, being exposed to so much new information from different speakers was more than worth it. Bringing home some fresh content and outlooks that we can apply to our paper allows us to put our best work forward, even more so, and bless all of you with the best-looking and sounding publication you’ve seen yet.
A change of scenery always does it for me and switching up my routine was exactly what I needed. We all have been working very hard in and out of school, and taking some time to really enjoy being away feels 1,000 times more rewarding. I’d say the La Vista trip was a 10/10, and I cannot wait to come back next year and pick up right where I left off.
Xoxo,
Ava
