On Tuesday, boys tennis took on West Torrance in an away match, beating them 17-1. After a close match last Thursday against Redondo High School, where they lost by 3 games, the Mustangs were able to buckle down against the Warriors and secure the win, even causing them to forfeit their final match. The Mustang’s record now being 8-7, as they head into the second half of their season.
“We are about 15 matches into our season and have about one month until CIF starts,” junior Aidan Tacinelli said. “Winning against West was a very positive showing that will definitely give us some confidence going into our future matches.”
In the first round of this non-league match, the Mustangs won 5-1 sending them into the second round with a strong lead. According to team captain senior Ethan Crowley, a strong start with doubles wins were crucial in getting a lead early on, while singles were stronger in the latter round.
According to junior Carter Ring, the entire team was really strong this match, especially sophomore Ethan Dover, who is a really important member of the team.
“Everyone played well and stuck to their game,” Crowley said. “Both singles and doubles stayed focused the whole time, with big props to Dover for winning against their number one singles, 15-13 in a tiebreak.”
The Mustangs approach CIF with angst as they hope to repeat their results last year, winning the D1 CIF title. According to senior Nick Beapure, it will be hard to pull of what they did last year, but when they have faith in themselves and compete, the team will have the most success.
“Mira Costa was ranked higher going into the match so I expected the win, but we outperformed those expectations,” junior Max Campbell said. “The biggest thing we need to work on as a team is our consistency, we play well and get big wins some days, but need to work on playing with this same intensity consistently every day.
The team’s next match will be on Tuesday April 11th at home. The Mustangs will take on the Centaurs when they return from Spring Break.
““Every match we play contributes to our overall record that determines entry into CIF,” Tacinelli said. “Our win today was very important because it got us into a positive winning record.”
