Senior Kaitlyn Fukumoto completed her Girl Scout Gold Award by painting three murals for The Volunteer Center and making cards for the kids the center serves. Fukumoto has been volunteering at The Volunteer Center, a nonprofit organization that serves under-resourced kids and families, since 2019.

“They wanted to spruce up the space because it used to be a mortuary,” said Fukumoto “It’s a protected site so they can’t make any structural improvements, so I brainstormed ideas and decided to paint a mural. I couldn’t touch anything, so I had to do it on wall dividers that they will hang up.”

Fukumoto started by drawing a sketch based on The Volunteer Center’s colors and slogan, and once that was approved, she began painting. Once she finished the murals, she met with a younger Girl Scout troop in the community to explain her project and teach them how to paint. Additionally, Fukumoto enlisted the help of members of her National Charity League class as well as Costa’s World Changers Club to create over 150 inspirational cards to be given to kids at the Center.

“The process was really fun to be able to learn more about the different projects that the volunteer center does and how they impact the community,” Fukumoto said. “My favorite part was teaching the younger Girl Scouts that I worked with how to paint based off my murals and seeing how inspired they were to create their own art.”
