In a wild comeback win on Wednesday, boys lacrosse defeated Palos Verdes, 10-8, in an away game finishing first in the Bay League with a 5-0 record.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Mustangs were down, 5-1, with their only goal coming from sophomore attacker Nick Marsh shortly after the opening face-off. Junior midfielder Rafferty Waterson ignited the team’s comeback with a hat trick of goals midway through the second quarter to put the game into reach, 6-4.
“We’ve been in situations where we’ve been down before,” Marsh said. The Mustangs went into the half down, 7-4, after a Palos Verdes goal, and suffered an injury after a hard hit to sophomore midfielder Dylan Fenton, who would later return to the field in the second half.
“I wanted to show PV that it was going to take a lot more than that hit to beat us,” Fenton said. “It gave us motivation to make the comeback.”
A rally of four points, including goals from Waterson and senior midfielder Jack Fiorito, gave the Mustangs a 9-8 lead, putting them ahead of Palos Verdes, which scored one goal in the second half. With five minutes remaining, a fight for a loose ball turned into Costa’s final goal, giving them the 10-8 win. The next game will take place on May 3 time and location to be determined.
“We knew it wasn’t a matter of if we were going to settle into our game and start scoring; it was
just a matter of when, and we did.” Marsh said.
