Costa students from Drama/Tech and Comedy Sportz competed in the Fullerton College Festival March 17-18 at Fullerton College.
According to senior drama student Kara Canty, more than 30 high schools from all over Southern California came together at Fullerton College. Students competed in categories such as performance, design and tech olympic drills.
“The best part of the event was that all parts of Costa’s visual/performing arts were able to participate together in the event,” said freshman drama student Chloe Persell “I’ve learned a lot this year, mainly from my peers and also the amazing schools at the festival.”
The performance teams all placed in the top three in their categories. Seniors Teddy Glozman and Abby Brown won first in the modern ensemble category with their scene “All in the Timing.” Juniors Siena Fredrick and Christopher Halkias placed third with “Death of the Salesman.” Seniors Lizzy Flemming and Lia DeFronce-Martini placed second in the contemporary ensemble category with their scene “Almost, Maine.”
“Our drama program has really come a long way this year, which is crazy because everyone is already so talented,” said Canty. “[Everyone] has been working super hard on their scenes, and I think it paid off.”
According to sophomore Jackson Stroyke, the students paired up with each other and practiced for weeks before the festival. The duets were able to choose a scene that was given based on the category they were entered in.
“We [spent] so many days and so much effort preparing for the Fullerton Festival,” Stroyke said. “We started by preparing our vocals, then our choreography, and then piecing it together was the hardest but most important part.”
Costa tech students competed in the tech olympics and brought two teams: gold team and green team. The green team won the overall tech olympics trophy for winning the “Wiring Tool Relay” and “Drapery Hanging” contest. The gold team also won for “Props Quick-Change” as well as “Tool and Hardware Identification.”
“All the performances and teams we brought did an exceptional job as shown through our placements,” said Canty. “The other schools brought inspiring routines as well, which was a good learning opportunity.”
