On April 20 during office hours, Costa’s Link Crew hosted the Sax Pack, choir, “Mamma Mia!” cast, and clubs who worked together to perform on the Mustang Mall stage and host numerous booths and interactive activities on campus.

The theme of Costachella was sustainable living. According to senior Link leader and public relations coordinator Brent Torres, Costachella is a significant event on campus that allows both students and staff to unite with one another, learn about new things, enjoy live music, and have fun.

“Costachella allows for student bands to share their talents with the school and gives a small music festival vibe for those who could not make it to Coachella,” said Torres. “Costachella every year also has a goal that we strive for, and this year was ‘Sustainability in the Earth.’”

MAMMA MIA!: Mira Costa Drama and Tech performs a cut from their upcoming musical “Mamma Mia!” that opens April 21. The event was held on April 20 during office hours.

Link Crew coordinator and English teacher Madison Hutchinson was the leading organizer of Costachella alongside senior and Link Crew event lead Rebecca Rytz and her board of leads. According to Rytz, [Link Crew] prepares by getting a list of clubs that [Link Crew] thinks portrays the theme, gathering outside businesses that want to donate to raffle, choosing bands and artists who would like to perform, finding outside organizations that want to have a table and coming up with prompts for the dream wall.

“[Costachella] is significant because it brings students together and helps them find new clubs and learn new things,” said junior Ava Ford. “I performed in Costachella as a part of the ‘Mamma Mia!’ cast. [The performance] was a cut from the musical, so we’ve been rehearsing this piece for a while.”

Coterie A capella performed Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” as well as “Bills, Bills, Bills,” by Destiny’s Child. According to Reyes, Coterie Acapella prepared for Costachella by learning and polishing songs during choir class as well
as during outside Coterie rehearsals.

“My favorite part of Costachella was performing with the friends I’ve made being part of the choir program at Costa,” said junior Jessilyn Reyes. “It’s always fun singing with them. People also can play games around thequad, which makes it even more fun.”

Link Crew set up a “dream wall” along the 40’s hallway where students could walk around and answer prompts regarding the theme. According to Rytz, students also got to reflect on different businesses and activities that students can go to or participate in to help the fight against climate change.

“My role for Costachella this year was doing the dream wall with another Link leader. Our question was, ‘What is a way Costa can help our planet?’ Students and staff could come to write their answer on a Post-it and earn a raffle ticket. Costachella is important because it’s a great way to be able to learn ways to help our planet.”
