XoXo, Ava: Ava talks about next steps

By Ava Nicols

Sports Editor

Hello everyone. I want to start this issue’s column by saying thank you. It feels unreal to be writing the last column of the year after sharing all my thoughts on, well really, just about everything. We talked through each holiday, the best and worst parts of school, the importance of being grateful, New Year’s resolutions, La Vista’s adventure in NYC, love, and most recently, spring!

Having a place to share my perspective and personal thoughts is one of the things I am most grateful for from my junior year. When the year began, I knew I wanted to take the next step, and that is exactly why I created this column.

Before I even got to school last August, my family, friends, and upperclassmen warned me, “Junior year is the worst,” or “get ready it’s going to be so hard.” For the record, it didn’t suck as badly as everyone said it would. Personally speaking, I felt like it was challenging but not impossible, and I wish people would lead with that instead of making it out to be some monster that we should fear. I accomplished more than I ever imagined during this past year, and I can only give credit to two things for this: myself and the support from my close friends and family.

My reason for bringing this stuff up is because, as we near the close of this school year, I know every single person at school around me is about to take some sort of next step in one, if not many, areas of their lives. Being supportive of one another makes these transitions much easier because, in my opinion, we can do so much more together than we can alone.

In my last column, I talked about how we are all part of the same “garden,” and as students, we share common “roots” in our high school. Even within a competitive academic atmosphere, it’s important to support one another despite our inside thoughts, and I know everyone has them. A willingness to  support your peers should never be kept inside, even if it’s just with a smile.

I am proud to be learning from people who are so inclined to push boundaries and strive for the best. I feel that our accomplishments are not something to compare but something to celebrate and be proud of each other for.

To conclude, through all the next steps we will be taking in the near future, we can never forget to be kind to one another and lead with actions we are proud of. I hope you were able to find joy and resonate with at least one aspect of this column. My next step is being your very own editor-in-chief of La Vista. I am beyond excited to take this step, and I promise to take my own advice and lead with compassion as I help inform and write about my academic community. Officially signing off!

Until next year,

Xoxo Ava
