Co-written by Chris Miller, David Callaham, Phil Lord, and brought to life by around 140 animators, the movie follows main character Miles Morales as he juggles both his normal life and his life as spider-man. While he is figuring out that balance, multiple universes in which other spider-beings exist start overlapping and collapsing in on itself. This leads Miles to aid assistance, teaming up with spider-people from all across the spider-verse.
There are so many things that make Across the Spider-Verse such a fantastic film. The first installation in the series was known for it’s breathtaking animation, incorporating all sorts of styles and most importantly, pulling from the comic book style. This made the first film so unique, and it’s no surprise Sony Animation easily surpassed the bar it previously set.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse* was released in theaters on June 2. The film raised the bar for animated films with its incredible voice-overs, well-thought-out plot, and stunning animations.
The voice acting paired with the riveting animation connects the audience to it’s characters. Miles is voiced by Shameik Moore, who does an excellent job at portraying a multitude of emotions just from a recording booth. Many other stars offered their voices for the film, with Oscar Issac, Metro Boomin, and Issa Rae all making appearances.
Main characters Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy take in the views of Earth-1610. Over the course of the film, the two’s chemistry is explored.
The voice acting could only come to be with the fantastic script. The film does an amazing job at focusing on the drama and action, all while easily integrating humor when needed. The plot flowed perfectly, not leaving holes or picking up a subject and then quickly putting it down.

Although the movie doesn’t leave plot holes hanging open, some can find it a bit overwhelming towards the end. Even though it never feels rushed, the movie does pack a lot into the end, and to many viewers displeasure, ends on a massive cliffhanger. However, this cliffhanger closes the movie well, for if not, the movie would start to feel prolonged.
Miles swings through Brooklyn on Earth-1610. His developed control over his abilities seen in the sequel show audiences his growth as Spider-man.
With the movie ending on a cliffhanger, many left the theater wondering when they will be able to find out what happens next. Thankfully, audiences will not have to wait another five years like they did waiting for the second movie. The final installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be released on March 29th of 2024.
Miles fights main antagonist The Spot. The villain was newly introduced in this film, and is destined to be Miles’s arch-nemesis.
