Associated Student Body (ASB) hosted the annual Spike-ball Tournament from Sept. 13 – 30, which began with 32 teams of two partners in a bracket-style competition in the 60’s hallway during lunch.
“The intense match-ups created a fun and lively atmosphere between [the teams] and the students watching,” said Caden Coons, an ASB referee.
Throughout the matches, crowds of classmates gathered to cheer on their friends. Many matches and rallies unfolded, leading to the gradual elimination of teams one by one, according to Coons.
“There were wipeouts here and there, but most of the teams held up pretty well against each other,” ASB referee Carter Ring said.
According to Ring, the finals experienced relocation. They were originally supposed to be held on the football field, but they were moved to the dodgeball court just before the game started.
“Supervision issues [prompted] the decision to change locations,” said Ring. “But students still had anticipation and excitement for the final match.”
The final match-up drew a throng of enthusiastic students, and the two teams, “Team OK” and “Peaky Blinders,” kept everyone at the edge of their seats with a closely contested score throughout the game, according to Ring.
“The games got our competitive juices flowing,” stated winner Nolan Kowalec. “Sean and I used our natural chemistry and communication to make our way through the bracket.”
By the end of the final game, after making their way to the top, team “Peaky Blinders” came out as the winner after numerous rallies.
“I enjoyed [the] competition [because] I would look across that spikeball net and see the faces of my friends and peers,” said Kowalec. “I [plan on] participating in future ASB tournaments throughout this year.”
