Costa’s Homecoming week was held from Oct. 21-27 and was full of activities including the Homecoming dance, dress-up days, a pep rally and the Homecoming football game.
The annual Homecoming dance was held in the gym on Oct. 21. The dance was themed “I Heart LA” and had caricature artists, magicians, a DJ and more.
“To set up for the dance, it’s a lot of work, but we have a lot of fun doing it,” said senior ASB member Emma Darrow. “ASB makes decorations all week, and the students who have the ‘entertainment’ job had been planning all the details of the dance for months.”
Homecoming spirit week was held after the dance from Oct. 23-27. There were dress-up days for each day of the week, including Adam Sandler Day, Tailgate Tuesday, On Wednesdays We Wear Pink, Hoe Down Throw Down Thursday, and Redondo Nerd Day. The Homecoming Court was made up of 12 elected seniors: Siena Frederick, Tyler Hirshberg, Whitney Marsh, Dash Clark, McLean Grimes, Hunter Gregory, Margot Powell, Devan Malik, Vivian Wood, Carter Ring, Emma Darrow, and Akash Mishra. The court had its own unique costume themes for each day of the week.
“Dressing up was definitely the highlight of the week,” said Powell. “My favorite day was Dynamic Duos when Devan and I dressed up as Phineas and Ferb. I was getting the funniest looks from people all around school. The court had a blast being creative and looking goofy.”
Throughout the week, the court participated in several activities during lunch. The games were held in the Mustang Mall and included a limbo competition, musical chairs and more.
“Being on the Homecoming court was such a fun experience,” said Darrow. “The games were awesome and such a great way for us all to bond and have fun in our costumes.”
The pep rally, held on Oct. 25 in the gym, marked the halfway point of Homecoming week. Dance and cheer started off the pep rally with a joint performance. Shortly after, ASB members welcomed the Homecoming court to the stage for the dances they choreographed.
“I was excited to show Mira Costa our school spirit,” said Clark. “We all had so much fun in the process, so I think the pep rally went well.”
On Oct. 27, the Homecoming game was against Redondo Union High School. The Mustangs won, 21-14, ending the 2023 Homecoming festivities on a high note.
“We got in a mindset to win that night, and we executed on the field,” said senior David Burga-Donovan. “We made sure to keep up that encouragement during the game, and we came out on top.”
The halftime show included performances from the band, color guard and dance team. The Homecoming court, cheer team, and dance team traveled around the field in floats and Mustang cars. At the end of the halftime show, Clark and Frederick were named Homecoming royalty.
“Being on Homecoming court was such a cool experience, especially because everyone on the court was so sweet, and we got the chance to get closer,” said Frederick. “Homecoming week will probably go down as my favorite week of my high school career.”
