Mira Costa sophomore Abby Levy is a hardworking student but an even harder worker when it comes to athletics. Specifically dancing, Levy dances with the Abby Lee Miller Dance Company, or the ALDC in Los Angeles.
Abby Levy has been dancing for just over thirteen years and since she was two. According to Levy, she has been dancing and competing since before she can remember, and it’s everything to her.
“I go to dance everyday of the week and train in all styles.” said Levy, “Monday through Friday I go from school to my dance studio and usually don’t get home until around 10pm, and usually my weekends are filled with rehearsals or competitions.”
Levy stated that she first met Abby Lee Miller in 8th grade at a class she hosted and after that, she fell in love. Every time there was an online or in person class, she attended. Levy now even competes with the
“Not too long after I started attending classes, Abby asked me to attend more in her studio in LA,” said Levy. “Since then I have grown a relationship with her staff and studio, and now I’m there every chance I can get.”
Dancing with such a big name in the industry can have such a lasting effect on one’s career. According to Levy, her classes havent just helped her become a better dancer, but they have also taught her a lot about the dance industry.
“When I first met her, I was in awe that I was even in the same room as her, it’s still crazy to think that she knows me by name.” said Levy, “she doesn’t act like a celebrity when she’s in the room, she genuinely just wants her students to get better and thrive as athletes.”
Levy said that Abby Lee Miller has taught her alot about work ethic and how to survive in the real world. Levy said that Miller is very knowledgeable because of how experienced she is, and being able to learn from her is very exciting.
“Ms. Abby Lee knows a lot about the process of being a professional dancer and teaches you how to audition in professional settings.” said Levy, “she does this by giving us tips on how to be prepared if you want to dance in the future.”
Levy expressed her favorite parts of dance through everything that it has provided her with. Through dancing, she has been given so many opportunities and options to explore as well as many connections and lasting friendships.
“Dancing allows me to travel and meet a lot of new people.” said Levy, “some competitions even allow me to travel all over the world. It allows me to become friends with people who live far away and it gives me experiences in a lot of cool places.”
According to Levy, she’s not totally sure what kind of career or future she wants to pursue after high school, all she knows is that she wants it to include dancing because it means so much to her.
“It’s such a big part of my life. I’m really grateful for the opportunities that it’s given me and even though it’s a really big commitment, I’m so glad I’m able to do it.”
