On Jan. 23 during Office Hours, Mira Costa held its annual Signs of Suicide (SOS) program to give information regarding suicide prevention.
The state of California requires Suicide Prevention for all 7th-12th grade public school students. Mira Costa has implemented its own program that included an informational slideshow, video and exit survey.
“Some of the common myths that exist about suicide are that if you have a conversation with someone about suicide, that you might introduce the idea, where it had not been on their mind,” said school counselor Dan Rubin.
The video provided stories of different students and people’s struggles with suicide. After the video, students were asked to complete a Signs of Suicide Screening survey and a request for help form.
“It’s important to have these programs because it can potentially save someone’s life,” said senior Lindsey Pulver. “Spreading the awareness of warning signs within our peers allows for a safer and closer community.”
