JoJo Siwa explores her identity and sexuality in her single “Karma,” released on April 5.
After weeks of promoting her single on social media, the singer-dancer-actress JoJo Siwa released ‘Karma’ along with her dramatic music video. This former “Dance Moms” star uses her new song to create an edgier image for herself and separate herself from her well-known girly aesthetic.
Siwa confidently embraces her sexuality through her new music and fashion style. In the music video, Siwa acts in scenes with other women and wears Kiss- style eye makeup and a meshleather one-piece. Although it displays Siwa’s new identity, the music video lacks a central concept and confuses viewers with aggressive and uncoordinated dance moves.
The bold and explicit lyrics mark a dramatic shift from Siwa’s lively pop songs like “Boomerang” and “Kid in a Candy Store.” Although the catchy lyrics come off as cheesy at times, the song explores complex topics about consequences, self-reflection, and growth. Siwa’s lack of vocal training is evident in the single, but auto-tune is able to correct most of her melodic errors.

Despite the song’s bewildering music video and mediocre vocals, it is a turning point for Siwa and her identity and can serve as an inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community. The song may have some cringe-worthy stanzas, but the overall message and purpose is an important message for Siwa’s young fan base.
‘Karma’ is available for streaming on Apple Music, Spotify, and Youtube.
