On May 10, Costa defeated Agoura Hills to win the Division Two CIF Southern Section championship. The Mustangs’ win marked their first-ever Southern Section title win.

Costa started strong with a goal within the first three minutes by junior midfield Dylan Fenton. Costa was able to use this momentum and maintain a strong lead of 3-1 by the end of the first quarter.

“Coming into this game I knew it would be a hard fight and we were ready,” Fenton said. “Using our early momentum was something we had been working on all year and I think it showed.”

Agoura responded quickly in the second quarter by tying the game with two goals in 13 seconds with four minutes to play. Senior midfield Rafferty Waterson and junior face-off Henry Disser scored 2 goals in seven seconds to take the lead and end the first half 7-5.

“Coming into the game I was hungry for a goal,” Disser said. “It felt good to score my first goal in the championship game and all my teammates were fired up. I think it gave us a lot of momentum for the rest of the game.”

According to Disser, the third quarter remained close throughout. Going into the 4th, the score was tied 9-9. With seven minutes remaining, both teams exchanged goals, making the score 10-10. Junior attack Nick Mash with little time left in the game was able to score the final goal giving Costa the lead, 11-10. Junior goalie Michael Butler was able to make four clutch saves in the final three minutes to seal the Mustangs’ victory.

“I am proud of every one of my fellow teammates and the work we put in together,” Butler said. “I feel like this game was a perfect representation of what we hoped to accomplish and I am so happy that we did.”
