The annual and long-awaited Spike-Ball Tournament, hosted by Associated Student Body (ASB), took the 50’s hallways by storm during lunch from September 9th to 18th.
The tournament’s entry fee was $6.00, which 64 students eagerly paid to participate in the excitement. A bracket of 32 teams was created with 16 divisions. Matches and rallies occurred daily, and the divisions within the bracket would alternate.
“The teams play best of games to a score of 11. Each team is informed of the rules by the referee on the court before they end up playing” said Will Nammack, ASB head of athletics.
During the competition, crowds of classmates at Costa cheered on their peers throughout the different matches, watching their friends get eliminated or exceed to the next round.
“The students tend to be very intense and invested in their team, as most of these students are very competitive,” Nammack said.
The final match on September 18th was played against the two teams “Kemple” and “Smildzins”. The matchup kept everyone at the edge of their seats with a close score throughout the whole game.
“The final match was exciting and a rollercoaster of emotions. Both teams gave it their all, battling until the very last moment” said Erin Farrel, ASB Referee.
By the end of the final game, the team “Smildzins” came out as the winner after many challenges and numerous rallies. The final score came out as 20 to 22.
“Winning the tournament felt exhilarating as our hard work and teamwork paid off” said one of the winners anonymously, “I had a lot of fun and will definitely be participating in asb events in the future.”
