On Wednesday, August 28th, Mira Costa High School kicked off the school year with the annual Back to School Night event. It is organized to give parents an inside perspective of what their children go through at school. It was a busy evening consisting of ten-minute class sessions to allow the parents to familiarize themselves with their child’s daily lives.

Students involved in the Associated Student Body (ASB)  made this event run seamlessly. They were stationed at various locations around campus, and wore bright-colored t-shirts with balloons tied to them making themselves easily locatable. . Their main job was guiding the parents through school, answering any of their questions and making the evening memorable. They also distributed drinks for the parents to have something to sip on while going from class to class.

Sammy Nammack, an ASB member, said “we set up stations so that parents can get to their classes easier, we also gave out food, and free things so that they would feel more welcomed.”

Back to School Night was a great opportunity for parents to converse one on one with teachers, have any of their questions answered, and get an insight into what their child’s education this year will look like . Also, being engaged in class rotations gave parets a clearer understanding of their child’s school experience.

ASB member Erin Farrell said, “Back to School Night was a very successful night,” She goes on to list how ASB accommodated the parents throughout the evening, “handing out T-shirts, meeting parents and directing parents to where they needed to go.”

Besides the class visits, the evening was an opportunity for socialization and a chance for parents to converse with other parents, Costa staff members, and fellow community members that they would not have otherwise been introduced to.

“ASB spread about 12 members throughout campus to help direct parents to where they needed to go,” said Farrell. “We gave out food and drinks, and free Costa shirts too.”

Overall, Back to School Night was a success, only being described with positive feedback.  It is a necessary event, used to inform parents on what their children will be learning in the upcoming school year, and ensure guardians that their children are getting well taught. Ensuring a welcoming environment at Costa.

“Back to school night was very informative, and I felt it had a community vibe,” said Mira Costa mom Jackie Maloney. “I liked how all the parents were there, and I’m glad I got to see what the kids were up to. It also flowed really nicely.”
