Local Artist, Julia Thomas, sells her artwork at Hometown Fair

Julia Thomas, a local artist, showed off her artwork at the hometown fair on the weekend of October 5th. Although there were many artwork focused booths at the fair, Thomas’s booth stood out with the textured palette knife paintings that it featured.

According to Thomas, she grew up in Kansas, a totally different environment than that of California. Thomas then studied fine arts her first year at Columbia College Chicago, but she  ended up graduating from the University of Sydney, Australia. After that, Thomas started her business, Juju Creates, and has been in business for about three years now.

“Since finding what feels like home in California, my art has flourished and has taken on a new direction,” said Thomas. “My art now reflects the beauty of the landscape.”

Textured palette knife painting isn’t a very popular art form. In fact many people may not even know what it is. It is an abstract type of art that can add dimension and texture to different landscapes, making it stand out amongst other types of art.

“With my signature palette knife style my paintings emulate the beauty of the natural world around us,” said Thomas. “The style adds a refreshing and unique pop of color to any space.”

Thomas’s love for painting came from her love for traveling. One of her favorite places to paint is California, “I’m obsessed with the coastal scenes,” Thomas said. At the fair, she chose to sell a lot of her California inspired artwork, including images of the desert, coast, and mountains.

According to Thomas’s profile on her website, she is “infatuated with the stunning and diverse vistas of California, and my artwork reflects my love for our surf culture, native flowers, and national parks.”

The hometown fair is a great way for small businesses to make some money. Thomas did very well at the fair, considering a lot of people were viewing her artwork. She not only sells her art here, but also on her online website, and at other events, including some upcoming ones such as the Art and Pumpkin Festival, the Carlsbad Street Fair, and the Renegade Craft.
