On October 10th, The Mira Costa girls golf team finished their season with a tough loss during their match against South Torrance. The final score of the match was tough, but even though they lost this game, the team still feels like a winner as they look back upon their strong season.

“Going into the last match of the season as a senior, I wanted to enjoy the moment and soak in the beauty of playing at Los Verdes Golf Course,” Varsity player Sophia Walker said. “Stepping onto the first tee always brings a mixture of nerves and excitement, which is one of the reasons I love golf!”

Looking back on the Mustang’s season, their clear cut goals, individually and as a team is what truly set them up for success. One of those main goals was to break 200 strokes, which they were able to accomplish earlier in the season against South Torrance.

“Going into the season, one of my main goals was for our team to break 200, which we did earlier in the season against South Torrance,” Walker said. “I also wanted our team to bond and have fun together this past season, which was achieved.”

Within the team’s success individual victories were gained as well. Capri Trozak, a girls golf teammate, mentions the impact of going into every training and match with a focused mindset.

“Before a match, I always try to be calm and zen. Listening to some music beforehand gets me in a good mood to enjoy the game,” Trozak said. “My goal for this year was to make Varsity and get my score average down. I’m happy to report I’ve accomplished both! It was a challenge, but I’m so glad I preserved it.”

The players weren’t the only thing bolstering the Mustang’s success throughout the season, the coaches’ tips and tricks are what helped players fine tune their swing and improve at the sport. The renowned coach, Jen Jones, specifically helped girls golf member Capri Trozak reach her full potential.

“One standout moment of the season for me was finally taking lessons with Jen Jones,” Trozak said. “I owe my best shots all to her. She really helped me correct my swing and get more into the game.”

The final match however left seniors with mixed emotions. They were sad about the loss and the end of the season, but the sense of camaraderie that came with the team, and the growth as a person they obtained make seniors forever grateful for the experiences this sport gave them.

“During our last match, I felt sad that the season was ending, but I enjoyed playing with my friend, Elle, who is also a senior,” Walker said. “After the match, I reflected on my experience playing on the Girls Costa Golf team for the past four years and how I have grown as a player, on and off the course.”

So, even though the Mustang’s ended their season with a loss they ended their season with a sense of pride. For their individual and team successes throughout the course of these past few months triumphs any losses they received.
