Throughout the last couple of years, landslides in the area of Portuguese Bend in Rancho Palos Verdes have become more frequent and more detrimental. The landslides have taken a heavy toll on the homes, roads, and utilities of residents.
Heavy winter rains have caused shifts in the land, forcing many people to go without basic necessities, including gas and electricity.
After implementing a new program to help its residents relocate, officials of Rancho Palos Verdes opened a voluntary buyout option to homeowners in the most hard-hit areas. They are offering 75 percent compensation based on the pre-disaster value of their property.
This program is specifically tailored to provide relief to families who have faced unprecedented damages and losses due to these landslides.
It is the hope of the city that this program will be a permanent solution for the community in terms of land structural stabilization, and preventing further damage from occurring moving forward. The top priority will be given to homes showing the most damage, including those no longer safe to live in.
