Mira Costa’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly was held in the Mustang Mall during office hours on October 29th. Organized by the Latino Student Union club (LSU), the purpose of the assembly was to reflect the importance of sharing and celebrating the diversity in our community.
During the event, LSU students sold homemade, culturally significant foods including traditional chicken and beef tacos, and churros. They also sold drinks such as Horchata, a creamy cinnamon-infused rice drink, and Jamaica, which is a hibiscus tea. Additionally, a Mira Costa student-led mariachi band performed during the event, formed by Costa juniors Jade Arellano and Sofia Morales, both of whom are members of the school orchestra and LSU board.
“We celebrated Hispanic heritage month, and sold a lot of yummy food that’s part of the Hispanic culture.”, said Spanish Teacher Sandra Martinez-Sellan, moderator of LSU.
The Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly has been a tradition at Mira Costa dating back to 2016, where students and staff are brought together to highlight and celebrate the many contributions of Hispanic Culture within our country. This assembly was specifically dedicated to one of the most impactful and significant pitchers in baseball history, Fernando Valenzuela, a Los Angeles Dodgers legend who recently passed.
“The main purpose of the event was to highlight influential Hispanics in the US, and in our community,” said Martinez-Sellan. “My favorite part of the event was definitely the student-led mariachi band.”
